2014 Jeep Wrangler Willys Wheeler Edition Front Three Quarters
We Hear: 2017 Jeep Wrangler To Get EcoDiesel V-6, 8-speed Trans
After initial reports that the next-generation Wrangler would be targeted toward a broader customer base and hearing all sorts of crazy rumors of it being essentially a crossover, the tide is starting to turn positively for fans of Jeep’s historic standard bearer. We’ve been reassured that the front and rear solid axles will remain and that it will retain body-on-frame construction. Still unknown is whether the new Wrangler will have a steel or aluminum body. However, there’s no question SUV-and-truck-heavy FCA is under more pressure than most full-line automakers to increase its overall fleet fuel economy. One relatively easy way to achieve mpg gains without sacrificing capability is diesel. And on that front, we have some potentially very good news about the next Wrangler.
Sources within FCA, which for obvious reasons wish to remain anonymous, have disclosed that one of the powertrain options for the next-generation Wrangler will be the 3.0L VM Motori V-6 EcoDiesel mated to the ZF eight-speed automatic. We’re big fans of this pairing, whether in the Grand Cherokee or Ram 1500. Combined with a lighter-weight Wrangler, this engine would give the Wrangler plenty of rock-crawling torque, as well as fantastic fuel economy (likely high 20s freeway or even 30 mpg). The current JK Wrangler is sold in global markets with a version of the old 2.8L I-4 sold briefly in the Liberty, mated to a five-speed automatic.
